Music sensation, Grace Decca has facilitated the bail process of some 4 inmates of the Douala Central prison in the Littoral region.
The Makossa gospel singer made the gesture on December 27, 2022 while communing with some female inmates of the facility.
She was accompanied by Rev. Pastor Njoh Simon, President of the EBNC. Sharing moments of the outreach, the ace singer said it was a βmoment of intense emotions, prayers, praise, entertainment and sharing.β
Spending well over an hour at the facility, she and the preachers sang and danced with the inmates. They also offered words of encouragement, before handing out food items and gifts to ease life in the prison.
The Douala Central prison was constructed in 1902 to hold 800 inmates.
Yet, like many other detention facilities in Cameroon, human rights groups note that it is overcrowded beyond capacity.
Some place the number of inmates at over 5000, a figure that makes life hell for its occupants given that resources are stretched thin and the risk of spreading infections, high.
Many suggest fast tracking court processes, given that a large number of those detained are in pre-trial detention.
