If you’re into self-development and you’re on the media space you must have come across affirmations and those who preach of its magical, powerful, transformative nature. It’s a growing trend and I can bet that if you haven’t come across them, you definitely will in no time from now. There is even an app for daily affirmations.

Ambassadors of this higher power will tell you that if you repeat a particular statement over and over on a daily it becomes who you are and your reality. For example, if you wake up every morning and say “I AM RICH” a couple of times, it will become your new reality (emphasis on the “I AM”). There are a lot of seemingly valid reasons as to why this will happen.

Affirmations they say are a way of reprogramming the sub – conscious mind. Given that the subconscious mind controls a greater part of human action, reprogramming it will mean changing your life. The mindset sets the tone for life; thus, the right mindset will turn you in whatever you wish.

I agree that the mindset counts but does the mindset alone bring about transformational circumstances? If we could become rich simply by repeating certain statements everyday wouldn’t the world be full of billionaires?

And yes, I have had my own share of affirmations. I even read several books on the subject and at the time it made sense. Now I just realize I was going through a rough phase, and I was gullible. How does a straight-thinking person think reciting the words on the cover of this post will make them rich? I targeted the areas of my life that could use a turnover with my affirmations, long story short it was a failure or better still i never experienced the magic.

But I am not questioning affirmations simply because they didn’t do much for me. I’m doing a reality check especially for those of us on this other side of the world. It’s very alluring to think there’s an easy way out. Yes, the Bible talks about the power of the tongue, we are aware of the power of words, but can we simply say things into existence?

A mindset shift is simply a first step in the process of change. You have to compliment it with effort, hard or smart work, positioning, strategy, preparation, thorough action makeover. There’s no magical fix to our lives and our society.

Thinking/believing you’re rich, beautiful, bold, confident, smart et al thanks to affirmations doesn’t for a second invalidate all what you have to do to achieve all that.

Life is a combination of the right thoughts + the right action.
